Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does it cost to publish a book yourself?

  • Can you self-publish for free?
You can self publish e-books for free but you wil still probably spend some money on artwork unless you do the cover artwork yourself.
  • Do you make more money self publishing?
Per book yes, but overall probably not because full distribution is harder to achieve without a traditional publisher.
  • Is Self Publishing worth it?
Yes, but the level of worth is what you put into it. Think of self-publishing as investing in yourself and your work as a business. It’s not simply going to happen without hard work.
  • Can an editor steal your book?
Technically yes, and this is why you need to register your manuscript with an ISBN to avoid this. Anyone can steal your book, without the proper ISBN. The industry standard is Bowker.
  • Is it hard to get a book published?
If you go the traditional route yes, but if you self-publish you just do it yourself.
  • Is Amazon Self Publishing worth it?
If you put out a good product and market it well, yes. They make it easy to use. They know that the more self-published authors in their system means more customers for advertising. It’s a great system for a reason.
  • Does Amazon own the rights to my book?
No, You own the rights to your book if you register it. Be careful with the “free” ISBN. This does not properly protect your work. Think of it like liability insurance on a car, it’s not completely covered.
  • Can I publish my own book?
Yes, there are a lot of free and paid services out there to help you. That is why we created the Book Puma Services through Blue Handle Publishing. To serve a part of the industry that needs help.
  • Can self-published books become bestsellers?
They can be, but it’s hard and rare. It takes time, money and marketing to get a book noticed by enough people for those lists. But you can still make a great career without being on those lists.
